Featured print side of The apotheosis of Hoche is one of Gillray's finest works.  the French Revolutionary General Hoche ascends to Hell, playing a one stringed harp made from a guillotine  Putti with liberty caps greet him, as do decapitated victims of the Revolution waving palm branches.  Beneath him lies the devastation of Brittainy.  Above is a gate with the ten commandments inscribed, but all are reversed.  Above the gate is inscribed EQUALITY with a sunburst surrounding it composed of bayonets and daggers.

Reversed side of Featured print plate 220 "Siege de la Colonne de Pompee", or Science in the Pillroy."  Gillray drew many satires of the French invasion of Egypt, based on accounts sent from Egypt to France that were intercepted by British ships and published in the London newspapers.  Here he shows a group of the scientists which accompanied napoleon's expedition perched precariously atop a column, as Turkish cavalry and soldiers attempt to burn them off or shot them off.  The scientists defend themselves by throwing books, one of which is entitled "Project of Creating Brotherhood with the Bedouins", another is Rousseau's "Social Contact", yet another is a hefty volume of the famous "Encycopedie".  Two scientists have tried to escape via balloon, have been shot down, and are now plummeting to their death upon upraised pikes.  This therefore is not only a satire upon the French Invasion, but also on modern science.
